Animal production is a hot topic in many discussions, not only because of the environmental impact, but also from an animal welfare point of view. These seminars will focus on some of the main discussions on the field of future animal production: what is the scientific background of this problem and how can research contribute solutions?
7 September 2010 (13.30h): 'Limits for selection: Belgian blue cattle', introduction by prof. M. Georges (ULg) and disputandus dr. I. Kolkman (UGent)
The Belgian blue cattle is well-known for his strong muscular development and production of lean beef meat. Due to the high musculature, caesarian section is common practice, although ethical questions can be formulated. Within the breed, other (genetic) problems exist. What are the possibilities for future selection within the Belgian blue breed, using genetic research and selection? |

In 2010 the Section for Medical Ethics, University of Oslo, and the European Association of Centres of Medical Ethics (EACME) will organise the EACME annual conference. The Section for Medical Ethics will be the co-ordinator and the host of the event.
There are four central topics: Empirical Ethics and Methodology; Empirical Ethics and Clinical Practice; Empirical Ethics, Benefit Sharing and Research; Empirical Ethics, Biopolitics and Human Rights. |

7 October 2010 (13.30): 'Sustainable meat consumption'
Meat consumption is questioned in the media because of the impact on the environment and human health. Due to a strong increase in meat demand worldwide, driven by developing countries, the animal production is increasing and spreading globally. Do we really eat to much meat? Is all meat 'bad'? How can our meat consumption be more sustainable, or do we all have to turn into vegans? |

The Bioethics Institute Ghent (BIG) organises on 11 and 12 march 2011 a conference: Continuous sedation at the end of life: Ethical perspectives
This conference will consist of a bringing together of known international researchers on end-of-life issues in general, and on continuous sedation in specific. The goal is to acquire profound and rich insights into a practice that is currently very unclear. The ongoing rising incidence of continuous sedation makes a reflection of this kind highly pertinent. |
